All at CLG Éire Óg Inis were saddened to hear of the passing of Martin 'Custy' Linnane who celebrated Clare's All-Ireland hurling win with us just last week at the clubhouse. We offer our sincere condolences to Nora, his sons Michael, Jerry, Anthony & Martin -all huge supporters of the club for many years, following in their Dad's footsteps-and to their families also.

The club will form a Guard of Honour following Martins requiem mass on Wednesday and invite members to join us.

Rest in Peace Martin.

Below is a post from Larry Brennan detailing Martins life and exploits on the field.

The death has occurred of Martin Linnane, Considine Road, Cloughleigh, Ennis, Clare.

Martin Linnane, Considine Road, Cloughleigh, Ennis and formerly of Old Mill Street, Ennis, Co. Clare. 4th Aug. 2024 (unexpectedly) at University Hospital, Limerick. Predeceased by his brothers and sisters. Sadly missed by his loving wife Nora, children Michael, Jerry, Anthony and Martin, daughters-in-law Finola, Dianne and Carole, grandchildren Cian, Evan, Ava, Katie and Eva, nephews, nieces, sister-in-law, extended family, friends and neighbours.

It was with great sadness I heard last evening the passing of Martin (Custy) Linnane. A man with a great sense of place but in particular his love of Ennis and Eire Og. He was a regular follower and was full of encouragement on the facebook page 'Ennis Share Your Old Pics'. He attended a number of book launches in Ennis associated with various area of the town and was also very supportive of these publications.

It was only last week we meet at the Eire Og Clubhouse where he was present to great the return of the Eire Og players recently crowned All Ireland Champions. He was active up to his passing, engaging with those he met.

I would simply describe Martin as “a true gentleman, proud of : Old Mill Street / 7 Considine Terrace (the place of his birth) his beloved Norah and family, his Club (Eire Og) and he would encourage all that he came in contact with him”.

A son of Michael Linnane & Nora Houlihan of 7 Considine Terrace, Hermitage. He was a fearless full or centre forward under the dropping ball. He came to prominence at minor level with St. John’s and played minor in 1954. He emigrated to England, where he joined the Michael Cusack’s hurling club which featured fellow Ennis men, Michael Doherty, Larry Blake and Paddy Duggan.

On returning to Ennis in 1967 from England he followed in his father’s Mick footsteps in representing Ennis with St. John’s & Eire Og. He was a wholehearted player and a great clubman, totally dedicated. He was only back a couple of months when he starred with the Clare intermediate team and went straight into Eire Og senior team. He scored four goals for that Clare Intermediate team against Limerick. He also served at Intermediate Team Manager for Eire Og.

Prior to retiring he worked at the International Hotel Shannon Airport as a porter.

His father Michael Linnane, died May,15 1967; his mother Nora, died May 2 1975; his brother Christopher, died November 28 1957; 7 Considine Tce; brother James died Dec 20 1989 aged 49 years. Burial was in the Calvery Section of Drumcliff.

Funeral Arrangements: Reposing at Kennedy’s Funeral Home, Ennis, on Tuesday (6th Aug) from 6 pm with removal at 7.30 pm to Ennis Cathedral. Funeral Mass Wednesday (7th Aug) at 11 am. Burial afterwards in Drumcliffe Cemetery. Family flowers only please, donations if desired to Sightsavers and the RNLI
