Academy News

We are back in full swing after the short summer break and the youngest age groups revert to even years for the remainder of the season. U8, U10 & U12 Go-Games will begin shortly.

U13 footballers have found life in Division 1 to be tough going so far but a marked improvement has been noted since the beginning of the campaign. The experience will no doubt stand to them later in their juvenile years playing football. This Friday evening we host Lissycasey in the final round. Game throws in at Pitch 2 (Flannans) in Eire Og at 6.30.

The U17 Football panel are getting through their Division 1 campaign having played four games to date. W2, D1, L1 leaves them in a good position to qualify for a semi-final place with three games remaining. Cratloe away will be our opponents next Wednesday evening 4th September.

The U17 hurling panels have been acquiting themselves well also this year so far. We are through to an "A" Championship Quarter-final in a couple of weeks.

Best wishes to the Academy panel who play Clooney-Quin this Friday evening at 6pm in the Academy "A" semi-final in Caherlohan (Note change of venue).

Nuacht ón Oifigeach Gaeilge

Beatha teanga í a labhairt.  That's a seanfhocal or saying which means 'speaking a language keeps it alive'.  As part of the club's involvement in Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonnchadh (the Joe McDonagh Foundation), which aims to promote the use of Irish in the GAA, members were recently asked to respond to a survey to gauge their level of interest in speaking and promoting our native language. Given when the survey went out, we had a satisfactory response of 40 replies, the great majority of which were very positively disposed towards greater involvement of Gaeilge in the life of the club, in particular that the club organise events involving Gaeilge for families, that the club initiate an Irish Language Plan and that coaching as Gaeilge be considered in the Academy.
Well the good news-an deáscéala-is that we have already taken account of these responses and a small team is working towards improving the profile of Gaeilge in the club. We hope to organise a social event for families in the next few weeks, our language plan will be based on the Fondúireacht programme and we hope to introduce some coaching as Gaeilge for some Academy teams shortly.
In the meantime of course our weekly Caint is Craic sessions are up and running again on Thursday nights in the clubhouse, 9-10pm for anybody who enjoys a chat, an argument, a yarn mainly as Gaeilge but we're not snobby about it, so if you have only the cupla focal feel free to come along.
Mar sin, fair an spás seo, beidh tuilleadh ag teacht.
Jimmy Cooney
Oifigeach Gaeilge.
