Clare Cup Senior Hurling League - Saturday March 26th, 2022.

Eire Og 1-15 St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield 3-20

They say goals win games, well 2 goals either side of halftime won this contest today for the Parish. In Eire Og’s 2nd outing in the Clare Cup this year, it was a much-improved performance from 2 weeks ago against the Mills on a sunny evening on the Clonroad with Danny Russell making a surprise return at center-back where he directed the play like an elite quarterback from the NFL.

There is always little between the Townies and the Parish with a little bit of spice added in for good measure but on this occasion without both our senior and U20 county stars, the balance was tilted in the Parish’s favor.

The match started at a blistering pace as both sides tore into each other and an early goal from Michael Heneghan after a defense splitting run by David McNamara from midfield put the Townies ahead but the lethal inside forward line of the Parish soon restored parity.

A goal just before halftime from a puckout put the Parish ahead by a goal at halftime (1-11 to 2-11). On the restart another quick goal from that lethal inside forward line seemed to take the wind out of the sails of the Townies.

While the defense with David Mc and Kevin Brennan tried valiantly, the Doora-Barefield halfback line had a strangle-hold of the game around the middle third and snuffed out any ball into the Eire Og forwards. This young Eire Og team featured 5 lads fresh out of last year’s minor ranks plus 2 other debutants. They are on a steep learning curve about hurling in the adult ranks in Clare.

The Parish finished out the game with a flurry of points while Eire Og were forced to take shots from long range with Danny Russell to the fore.
