Eire Og 2-7 Clooney-Quin 0-9
The Eire Og Junior football team recorded their 1st win of the 2022 campaign on a lovely summer evening in the wilds of Clooney. The commonly used term is “it was a game of two halves”, well in this case “it was a game of three-quarters and the final quarter” – in that Eire Og dominated the game for 3 quarters building up an 8-point that led to a frantic final quarter where the Eire Og goal was under constant siege.
From the throw-in, the men from Clooney went onto attack and notched the 1st point from play but once the Eire Og veterans got their hands on the ball, the traffic was one-way. The Clooney defense was pulled asunder by the running of the Eire Og inside forward line of Brian Shannon, Eoin Glynn, and Ronan Doyle. They notched 2 goals in the 1st half and could have had much more. The link-up play between Shane Daniels and Eoin Glynn was reminiscent of 10 years ago! The balls sprayed into space from both Shane and Rory Gallagher were delightful allied with the hard running of both Niall O’Donoghue and young Jack Lynch, the Eire Og team went into halftime with a 2-4 to 4-point lead but it could have been so much more.
The 2nd half started off where the 1st ended with the Townies taking the game to the Quin lads. They stretched the lead out to 8 points with great individual points from both Niall O’Donoghue and the irrepressible Brian Shannon. As the game turned into the final quarter, the Eire Og lads seemed to switch off and were unable to retain possession, this led to the Quin lads turning up the pressure and the Townie’s goal was under siege for the remaining minutes. While the Eire Og fans prayed for the final whistle, Clooney added several points but were unable to get that goal to draw level.
