Clare Cup Senior Hurling League - Saturday March 12th, 2022.
Eire Og 1-7 O’Callaghan’s Mills 2-15
In a wet, windy and miserable Kilkishen today, the Eire Og senior hurlers started out their 2022 league campaign with a comprehensive defeat to a much sharper Mills outfit. After a sunny start to the day, the rain started on the road out to Kilkishen, and the weather proceeded to get progressively worse from there.
This was a much-changed Eire Og senior hurling team from their championship hurling semi-final defeat last year to Inagh-Kilnamona, featuring 5 debutants from the start and a bunch more introduced from the bench in the 2nd half. The game was also significant for the return to the hurling fold of Conor O’Halloran.
The game started even enough with our 2 county stars, Aaron Fitz and Darren O’Brien, really standing out. However, as the wind picked up and the weather deteriorated, the Mills got a grip around the middle and piled on the points to lead 1-12 to 1-3 at halftime with Niall O’Connor (Joino) grabbing a fine opportunist goal for Eire Og.
With the wind in their backs in the 2nd half, the hope for a comeback was on. However, an early 2nd half goal for the Mills put paid to that hope. Plus, the deteriorating weather and the cut-up pitch made any fluid hurling impossible.
The game ground on to an easy Mills win with everyone glad to get out of the terrible weather.
