Intermediate Camogie Division 2 League - Friday April 8th, 2022.
Eire Og 0-14 Clarecastle Ballyea 1-3
The Eire Og intermediate ladies got their League campaign off to a winning start this evening in bright sunny but chilly conditions on the St. Flannan’s field. The Townie ladies played a flowing running game allied with tough tackling that their near neighbors had no answer for.
From the throw-in, the Eire Og ladies ran at the Clarecastle-Ballyea defense who were forced into conceding free after free to staunch the tide. This allowed the Townies to build up a few points lead before a breakaway goal against the run of play rocked the Eire Og ladies and brought the sides level.
The Clarecastle-Ballyea team had no answer for the running game exemplified by Orla Devitt and Maria Redmond from midfield who ran through their opponent’s defense like a hot knife through butter. Both are a joy to behold with the ball in hand. Ably assisted by Sarah Redmond who knocked over points with abandon. Once they recovered from that shock of an early goal, the Townie ladies rattled off a series of points to go in at halftime leading by 0-10 to 1-1.
It was obvious that if Clarecastle-Ballyea were to get anything from this game, they had to throw all and sundry at Eire Og in the 2nd half and this they did with the resumption of play. But the Eire Og defense held firm and threw themselves into tackle after tackle to contest every ball. Their spirit and fight were great to see. They limited Clarecastle-Ballyea to just 2 scores, only 2 points, in the 2nd half while tacking on 4 more points at the other end. Clarecastle-Ballyea to their credit never gave up and pushed the Eire Og ladies to the bitter end but the Townie ladies ran out 0-14 to 1-3 winners.
Overall, a great start to the Eire Og intermediate camogie team’s league campaign and if they can sustain that lovely combination of a fluid running game with a hard-working pressing game when not in possession, then they should have many more good days ahead of them this year.
