Clare Junior A Football Championship Quarter-Final - Saturday, September 17th 2022

Eire Og Inis 0-12 St. Senans, Kilkee 1-13

The Eire Og Junior A Footballers bowed out of the 2022 junior football championship today out in a sunny Kilmihil after being beaten by the men in blue from Kilkee. This young Townie team will reflect upon what might have been as they started the game so well, rushing into a 4 points to 1 lead and looked in control of the game for the 1st quarter led brilliantly by Jack Joyce, Colin Reidy and Niall O'Donoghue with both Graham Glynn (back from down under) and Brian Shannon a handful inside. Then a long deflected shot ended up in the back of the net to bring the west Clare men back into the game. All of sudden the men in blue started to believe and they ran at the young Eire Og defence to race into a 3 point lead at halftime 1-6 to 0-6.

At halftime, the Eire Og crowd hoped for a repeat of the spirited 2nd half display last week in the Junior hurling quarter-final against cross-town rivals, the Banner. However, it was not to be, the Kilkee men had a foothold in the game and were not going to let go without a fight. They piled on the points to race into a 6 point lead whereas the Townies had to rely on the boot of Jack Joyce from frees to stay in touch. The Kilkee men dominated the middle third and snuffed out any ball inside to the Eire Og twin threat of Glynn and Brian Shannon.

In the last 10 mins, the young Townie team threw everything including the kitchen sink at the Kilkee defence but they held firm and could only narrow the gap to 4 points. Regardless of that, Johnny Griffin and his team will feel satisfied with getting to the championship quarterfinals considering they had to rely on a relegation playoff to avoid the drop in the league but they might also feel that this was a game and a Kilkee team that they could have beaten. The Townies were best served by Jack Joyce, Niall O’Donoghue, Colin Reidy and Rory Brennan while Graham Glynn and Brian Shannon were always a threat.

Onto next week and it's the championship semi-final vs Clarecastle out in Corofin for the Eire Og Junior A hurling team.
