A great day was had at our 2023 St. Stephen’s Day Tournament with Shanaway Road clinching the Cup title from the reigning 2 in a row champions Turnpike Road. Turnpike made a good comeback from a groggy start in their first game and came away with the shield title. Well done to all the lads and ladies that lined out on the day and thanks to everyone that turned up to support their teams and thanks to the captains of each team for rallying the troops:
Clare Road - Niall O Connor/James Sweeney
Flannan’s Road - Kevin Moynihan
Gallows Hill (Turnpike) - Philly Walsh
Gort Road - Liam Corry/Rory Gallagher
Kilrush Road - Kevin Brennan
Lahinch Road - Anthony O Halloran
Shanaway Road - Brian Cooney/Ruth Nihill
Tulla Road - Dean D’Auria
Many thanks to the referees who came out in good spirits to enable the games to go ahead: Niall Malone, Barry Keating, John Bugler and Pat Healy and to our U16 lads for umpiring and collecting the charity donations .
Of course, days like these don’t happen of their own accord so a big mile buíochas to organisers and scorekeepers on the day Mike Brennan, Niall O’Connor, Aileen Doohan and Bernie Warren. Thanks also to photographer Raymond O’Mahony for the snaps captured from the day and to Ollie Mullooly who made for a great atmosphere on the day by pumping tunes to the crowd, and providing the sound system for the Cup final commentary ala the man himself Rory Hickey and analyst Phily Walsh!
Thanks to Mary McMahon, Auriol Considine and Gemma Fitzgerald who all had a busy day lashing out coffees with an edge and yummy hot chocolates. For anyone that may be accidentally omitted a huge thank you.
Finally, well done to the players and supporters that contributed so generously to our charity collection on the day. A tasty sum of €1565 was collected for this year’s chosen charity, the Cuan an Chláir centre. Cuan provide and run a day care centre and sheltered housing for the elderly on the grounds of Cahercalla Hospital, a presentation will be made to Cuan in the coming weeks.
